Application Takeover

Your developer is gone. Your application is not. We take it from here.

software project takeover

The situation is more common than you think

The freelancer who built your platform stopped answering. The agency rotated its team and nobody remembers your codebase. The technical co-founder left. However it happened, you now run a business on an application that nobody maintains — and every passing month adds risk: no security updates, no backups verified, no one to call when it goes down.

Taking over inherited applications is a core Synapse Code service, not a favour we do reluctantly. We have a structured process for it, we do not need the previous developer to be available, and we do not start by blaming their code. The goal is simple: make the system safe, understood and owned again.

No handover needed

We rebuild the picture from whatever exists — even if the only copy of the code lives on the production server.

Stabilise first

Backups, access, monitoring and the riskiest failures come before any feature talk.

No rewrite-by-default

We improve what exists; a rewrite needs evidence, not opinion.

the process

how a takeover works

1

Secure access

Inventory and secure everything: code, servers, cloud accounts, domains, DNS, databases, third-party services. Recover what is missing. Verify backups actually restore.

2

Assess & document

The Takeover Assessment: map the code, database, cron jobs, queues and integrations; rank every risk by business impact; write it all down.

3

Stabilise

Fix the failures waiting to happen — like the production cron jobs we found accumulating until they exhausted server memory. Monitoring, alerting and a deploy process come next.

4

Own & improve

Move to long-term maintenance: updates, performance work, version upgrades and new features — with one accountable partner.

FAQs

takeover questions

No. A handover helps but is not required. We reconstruct the picture from what exists — repositories, servers, databases, DNS, third-party accounts and the running application. Even when there is no repository at all and the only copy of the code is the one on the server, we recover it from there, put it under version control, and document everything we find.

Almost never. Our default is to stabilise and improve what exists. A rewrite is recommended only when the assessment shows the system genuinely cannot be evolved safely — with the evidence to back it up.

Access is granted by you, scoped to what the work needs, and documented — you always know who can touch what, and everything stays under your ownership. NDAs are standard practice on request, and you can revoke access at any time. More on How We Work.

Securing access and removing immediate risks typically starts within the first days. You receive the written risk report early, so you always know where things stand and what comes next.

Whatever access you have: code repository, hosting or cloud account, domain/DNS, database, third-party services. If some of it is missing, recovering access is part of the takeover work.

It starts with a fixed-price Takeover Assessment, agreed up front. Urgent stabilisation is then estimated from the findings and billed for time actually worked, with a budget cap you control — see how pricing works.
